| WHAT IS THAT YOU'RE SAYING? Let's clear some issues regarding lyrics on various doublePark songs. It works like this: What are the lyrics and what does it mean? Got a question about a lyric, Send an e-mail to doublepark@afterhoursmusic.net and we'll post it right here. 1. I Don't Want To Party (2nd verse) "SO I WANNA STAY AT HOME AND GROOVE ALONG WITH SOME VH LP" VH = Van Halen (cool band from the U.S.) LP = Long Player (a music format that was popular before the CD that was popular before mp3) For those who knew about the LP but were wondering about VH, the clue is in the next line. "CAUSE I'M A SUCKER FOR THE EARLY ONES WITH DAVID LEE" Now wait a second, isn't the Van Halen singers full name David Lee Roth? What happened to the Roth? Well, Roth doesn't rhyme with LP but Lee does. Plus it would have been one syllable too many to fit the groove. If you want to hear what VH was all about, get the early ones with David Lee. 2. The Loser (last verse) "ALLOW ME TO QUOTE WHAT A GREAT MAN ONCE SAID" OK, who is this great man? It is of course Marshall Mathers aka Slim Shady aka Eminem. The following line is the quote, taken from "Rock Bottom" off the "Slim Shady LP" (Look kids, that word again) "I NEVER WENT GOLD OFF ONE SONG, I'M RUNNING UP ON SOMEONES LAWN WITH GUNS DRAWN" A terrific album when you're furious and feel like a complete failure in every way. And if you're a struggling musician and no one knows how great you are cause they're all busy making Celine Dion even richer, you can't top the "Slim Shady LP". 3. Smittened Kitten (title) Why is that the name of that song? I've listened to it a million times and I'm a cat person and I love cats, but not once do you mention a cat, a kitten, a claw or even a fricking sandbox? "Smittened kitten" is something I picked up from the character Phoebe in the sitcom "Friends". She said it and I liked it. I didn't know what to name that song. The work title of that song was "Right Now And Not Later" which I stole from The Shangri-Las. After using both their lyrics and melody (only time ever I swear), I figured I better name it something entirely different yet relevant to the topic. 4. Babysteps (2nd verse) "I DIG LIZ PHAIR AND I'M FAIRLY NEAT" So ...........guess you dig Liz Phair huh? Truth be told, I've only ever heard one of her songs ("Polyester Bride" which I do dig). It was something the guy in the song might say when he's nervous and wants girls to like him. Not all songs are biographical, however I am fairly neat. 5. California (2nd verse) "YEAH I'M GETTING READY MY FORMULA'S SPIKED" Now listen Mr. Park, formula is a beverage for cute little babies. Do not spike it please. If you have to spike something, spike the punch bowl at some High School Prom or something. Spike some cool lemonade on a hot day. But step away from the formula. The guy in the song is just trying to be a bit more of daredevil. He's not giving up his formula but he is ready to catch a buzz. Almost going all the way. Mixing it up. 6. When You're Not Around (2nd verse) "LIKE A FAVORITE SONG, PROBABLY KISS, DESTROYER JUST CAN'T GO WRONG" Did you hype up "Destroyer"
on the 2nd album deliberately in order to sell more copies of the 3rd
one, "My Destroyer"? I just like Kiss. Easy Lenny. Relax. Jeez. 7. California (2nd verse) "I'M PUSHING THIRTY GOT A FOOT IN THE GRAVE" You were born in 1972 and the song came out 2006. What is that about...huh huh? Lying about our age are we? I wrote the lyrics to "California"
in 2001 when I was 29 and actually pushing 30.
